German Contrabassist/Composer Joscha Oetz has played with artists such as Barre Phillips, Michael Brecker, Dave Liebmann, and Don Byron. An extremely versatile musician, his experience includes free improvisation, Jazz, Hip Hop, Cuban and Turkish music etc. He has been performing, recording and playing for TV and radio broadcasts all over Europe and beyond.
Recently, he published his debut CD "The Loonators" with his Europe based quartett on ZeroZero records. This group features Oetz's compositions and represents his vision of a contemporary jazz/improvised/groove music. Openness as opposed to traditionalism/purism/ignorance is the basic principle of this music. Defining a personal and authentic sonic identity is the goal. Reflection on a big variety of roots and influences is the base. Nevertheless, these styles are not necessarily reflected audibly in the sense of quoting, but become a part of a unique musical language.
Having moved to San Diego, California in the Fall of 2000, he studies with Bass legend Bertram Turetzky. His newest project is the group Perfektomat which features spoken word by local heros the Able Minded Poets. This band presents a brandnew approach of blending lyrics and never heard before sonic vibes in an always grooving fashion. Perfektomat is: Michael Dessen - trombone; Joey Corano - guitar; Hans Fjellestäd - electronics; Nate Hubbard - drums; Joscha Oetz - Contrabass
