Kristy Cheadle is a percussionist, performance artist, improviser, and yogi dedicated to making living music and to living music-making. Her work explores movement and the body, everyday percussion instruments, varying states of (musical) consciousness and astral travel, and self-parodying gender play. She has appeared in Europe, Mexico and throughout the United States, and has performed and/or recorded with Steven Schick, David Hykes, Roland Rachele, the SONOR new music ensemble, Vanessa Tomlinson, Hans Fjellestad, Marcos Fernandes, Jason Robinson, and others. Additionally, Cheadle has performed under the direction of Muhal Richard Abrams, George Lewis, Harvey Sollberger, and Rand Steiger. She is a four-year member of the percussion sextet "redfishbluefish," half of an experimental, improvised duo with reedist/improviser/composer Jason Robinson, and a member of the San Diego-based Trummerflora Collective. A Ph.D. candidate in Music at the University of California San Diego, Cheadle works under the direction of Jann Pasler, George Lewis and Steven Schick. Her dissertation in progress is titled Body Noise Space Time: Power and the Body in Percussion Performance.
